The Growth of Women in the Fleet Industry

Hi there! I'm Elle, a guest blogger for Luke. I'll be writing about women in the fleet industry today - and if you fancy reading more from me, you can check out my blog .  The fleet and lorry industries have always had the tendency to be dominated by male drivers and male workers. However, these preconceived notions have been dramatically challenged during the last decade, with more and more women breaking into the fleet industry than ever before. There are now a growing number of female roles within this competitive environment and it seems as if this trend is only beginning. Let us take a look at some prime examples of successful women in the Fleet and trucking industries, and how they’re pioneering a growth of gender equality in a primarily male-dominated industry. Women Business owners are leading the way Whilst many years ago, most large Fleet companies were owned by men, there are more and more companies growing and expanding – that have women founders. One example of thi...

FREELANCE LUKE!

Hello everyone. So as many of you will know I was unfairly given the boot from my transport manager job at Virginia. The truth is I was thinking of leaving anyhow as the stress was insane. I got back on the the road on Saturday and it felt like coming home, hitting the M5 in a Volvo FH 500, radio on, stress free work, it was bliss and made me realise it all turned out for the best. Anyway, back to now. Im now a freelance driver. I want to work on my terms when I want to work. I've been a driver for 18 years and have a full clean C+E and D+E licences so I can drive coaches and trucks. I'd love a bit of coach work in the summer to keep my hand in. All up date with CPC and have a packages ADR licence. Im interested in a variety of work. Mostly local but I do want to do trips to Europe on occasion. I spent 3 years piloting a FH16 750 so I can be trusted with any truck! I have experience with many types of work. Fridges (hanging and boxed), flats, curtainsiders, euroliners, tankers,...

I'M BACK!

OFFICE LIFE!

So,  here I am, sat at my desk wondering what to write. As you will know I gave up full time driving 3 months ago to move into the office, I swapped a truck for a briefcase effectively! Many questioned my wisdom in doing this, expecting me to pine for the road and that I'd soon go back driving again. I actually thought myself that I would miss driving but actually, did I? Surprisingly no, not at all. In the last 3 months I haven't for a second missed driving and love my new role. So my new job, what is it? Virginia Logistics the company I work for have long wanted to set up a UK depot but as is often the case time was an issue, no one within the company could spare the time to set it up and employing a new person to set up a whole new division would be a bit of a risk so when I decided to stop tramping they offered me this role. To say I was over the moon was an understatement, I'd always wanted to give up full time driving before I was 40 and all of a sudden yet another dr...

GUEST BLOGGERS

Yo dudes and dudettes. I've had an idea. I know, a rare occurrence. Inspired by twitter accounts who have a different guest tweeting each week I'm going to do the same with my facebook page (no ones gets their hands on my twitter). Basically each week, and for a week I'll make a different person an admin so they can then post as I do. As you can imagine this will require some rules, which I will set out below. 1. You must work in the transport industry or a closely related industry. You don't have to be a driver, in fact I'd like to see a wide variety of different people so we can all see the other sides of the industry. 2. Your posts should be work related. The lorry-driver.com Facebook page is very much all about transport and so should your posts be. 3. Absolutely no swearing, abuse, racism, homophobia etc. In general or directed at anyone. I won't tolerate this, my page is built on positivity. 4. No politics, no 'this driver cut me up' sorts of posts...

HIGHWAYS ENGLAND IS DAMAGING THE COUNTRY

Hello friends. I need to get a little rant of my chest..... I recently had two weeks off, it was lovely. On my return I went straight out with a load for Budapest. Ballina in the West of Ireland is a long way so had four days to do it. Lovely run. I delivered 2am Saturday, reloaded midnight Sunday at same place and headed back. Because of the loading time I got to run back overnight. I tweeted how this was a great way to run through Europe and that I could get 50 to 100km more done on a nightshift. I got some tweets about the UK being a nightmare at night so I smiled to myself and replied that that is very true. I flew back, lovely quiet motorways, flying along. Well, until I hit England. Coming round M25 and up M1 I see signs warning of problems on the M4 (almost nobody heading north on M1 is likely to have the M4 on their agenda). I stopped in Coventry for a spot of shopping and off I went. I was gonna go up M6 Toll but matrix signs said shut so carried on. Just before the M6 junctio...
